Disaster in Japan Empty Disaster in Japan

Post  nahn-SEK-wuh-tuhr Mon Mar 14, 2011 10:36 am

I don't know if everyone watches the news lately or not, but as I'm sure everyone's heard, Japan has suffered both their most terrible earthquake ever (and over a thousand aftershocks) and a tsunami that has destroyed much of the smaller coastal cities. In addition, two nuclear plants have had partial meltdowns as a result, and there may possibly be a third. It's being called the worst disaster for Japan since WWII.

In some of the places hit by the tsunami, there are more dead than alive. And many thousands more are missing. Entire towns have been leveled, and are now nothing more than large expanses of debris.

For those of us with family in Japan, it's extremely difficult to get in contact with our loved ones. We were only able to reach ours through Facebook. My family was lucky enough to mostly be living in Kyushu (the southernmost island), but some live in Tokyo, and they are having to have supplies shipped to them from relatives because there is NO food or water. We don't know what happened to one of our elderly aunts, because no one can get in touch with her.

I hate to spam you guys with sad news; like I mentioned on Tegs, I wanted to do an entry about it, but now I don't have my tablet. I just wanted to ask that everyone keeps Japan in their thoughts. I hate being away from home, all I want to do is mourn right now. :(

Over 1000 aftershocks?! D: I've never heard of an earthquake this bad. What's with all of the natural disasters all of a sudden??

But seriously, I hope you can get in touch with your aunt. I have a friend whose grandparents live in Japan, but I haven't been able to get in touch with her (she lives in the U.S.)to find out how they're doing. A lot of people in my town have friends/family in Japan, and they've been running up the walls trying to get in touch with them. This whole thing is beyond terrible, but I'm glad to see the outreach that people are putting forth to help Japan. My mom told me that the earthquakes actually moved the islands about 8 feet and tilted its axis. While I know you aren't a religious person, I just want you to know that you and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers, alright? <Smile Don't give up!!!

That's what I just heard on the news. :( And I've read that part of it has to do with global warming (not sure how it impacts earthquakes, though), and part has to do with increased urbanization; concrete and man-made structures increase the intensity of floods (there's nothing for the water to drain or seep into, so it builds up in strength and speed). Also, while I hate to put it in such a statistical sense, the increasing population makes for a larger scale of destruction: whereas before, a disaster may have hit a small, non-notable community, it now destroys tons of property and hits communities far more populous in size.

And thank you; you're so kind. <:') I hope that everyone with family in Japan will be able to contact them soon--the one thing that comforts me is that I know how resilient Japanese people are. I am sure they will pull through this.

I will definitely donate money. It seems like that wouldn't be enough. I pray for the dead and the living every night now, and to see such a high death toll from a natural disaster is so heart wrenching. ):

@babby: Thank you so much. When you think about it, a gallon of water costs...around $1.50? So $10 can do much more than it sounds. :) And I've heard that already a lot of money has been donated in this manner. <3 <3

@both: Thank you <3 My only hope now is that there won't be any further diasaster because of the nuclear plants. :(

..Wow. I do not like that smiley in my comment;; It seems so inappropriate. Sorry.

I hope so too. :C I'll be completely honest and say I was panicking about the nuclear power plants. Hopefully everyone can evacuate quickly and safely. I heard that transportation is a mess because of the main roads and such getting ruined during the earthquakes. Of course that's only what I've heard..

Thank you for the number! I have been wanting to donate, but had not yet, because I'm not sure what my bank account number is. ): I know 10 dollars isn't much, but it's better than nothing. So thank you! I really hope the best for your family. Our town's sister city is in Northern Japan, and we have a big exchange program with them. ): I just read that their city is mostly fine, which is good, but given the nuclear problem... I just give all my heart to the people of Japan.

I wasn't sure how to word this response truthfully I was a little bit relieved to know that it could've been much worse if Japanese buildings weren't up to code. I found it amazing that most went beyond code standards and made huge buildings resistant to earthquakes but I suppose nothing could withstand that. I hope everything in Japan right now is able to pull through this travesty. Do not give up hope even if someone says otherwise.

@blank: pffft, don't worry about it; I'm constantly having to go back to disable smilies in my posts. XD

Oh god, you have no idea how badly my heart sank when I first caught wind of the nuclear plant problems. After doing so much research on Chernobyl... Well, to say the least, it has got me nervous. :( And yes, from what I've heard, transportation is quite bad. I'm not sure about the situation right now, but for a while none of the trains were working (which is the primary mode of transportation there), and people were just stranded in the city with no way to get home.

@oppy: Thank you, it means so, so much. <3 Even in the midst of such a tragedy, it really is uplifting to see how much people care. I make fun of Japan a lot and often talk badly about it (concerning the Ainu and whatnot), but I really do think it's the most beautiful place, with the most wonderful people. With all the destruction it's seen in the past, it's so heart-breaking to watch it happen all over again, because of something that couldn't be helped. I'm so sad for the whole country. :(

@harle: If there's one thing I am confident of, it's that the people will pull through. During WWII, on average, half of every city was totally destroyed (some up to 99%), and yet they rebuilt and prospered. One of our great virtues is endurance; I have no doubt that, despite how sad and awful this has been, the Japanese people will overcome it. They have a quiet strength in them. <:)
