Paved with Good Intentions [Cosim/Public] Empty Paved with Good Intentions [Cosim/Public]

If one came to work at a carnival for showcasing strength, one couldn't expect to be left alone after that. Not that taking down the framing of the tents at the end of that part of the circuit was that much of a chore-- what else did Cosim have to do? What else did he really want to do? Contrary to what popular belief was, he found mindless construction and deconstruction a rather good use of his time. He had nothing to worry about. Who knows what he would have gotten himself into if he didn't have responsibilities? Not that he didn't trust himself... well, he really didn't. Lately he was beginning to rethink his whole outlook on... things. He wasn't really sure. He didn't spend all that much time with himself.

But it was at the outside post for the administrative tent (he'd given up trying to find anyone who claimed to run things) that he came face to face with himself. Or... a badly made photograph. Under it a few words that, even thought his english wasn't the best, he knew right away. He saw the word "criminal" and the all-too-often-used adjective he'd seen for himself "dead or alive". He didn't bother to look at what his life was going for these days. There was a bigger question at hand.

Did this mean the authorities knew he was here? They would be moving soon but the long line of cars and caravans was easy to follow. All this time he had taken it easy, almost as if this place was in some sort of bubble where the law couldn't reach him. But they had. And now it was his move. Run away from this whole life and all he had amassed here? He had the money. But hardly the heart. Could he fight them back if they came looking? He wasn't sure what he would be up against.

For the first time, he had some real thinking to do. And he had no idea what Cosim would do. Who was 'Cosim', even? All this raised more questions he didn't feel like answering but wouldn't leave him alone as he walked back to the camp, eyes on that printed memoir of himself rather than where he was going. Most moved out of the way, but some had been barreled over. He paid no attention.

Who was he? He found himself asking. Was he the man in the photo or the man... here? Or had the man in the photo simply tried to put on a costume of another to escape the inevitable?

Sonya had, of course, not seen the wanted posters. And even if she could, she was probably even worse with English than he was, and would have only found it confusing.

That wasn't to say she never wondered about his past and whether or not it was going to catch up with him. It wasn't something they generally talked about (for one thing, the idea of him being a criminal frightened her), but it was always there, in the back of her mind. How could it not be? He'd murdered; he had the shackles to prove it. To believe that no one was searching for him at this point would be beyond foolish.

What if they came for him and locked him up? She'd never see him again... And it wouldn't be much of a stretch to assume that her life would fall apart in his absence. He was her support, her caretaker in her disability, and the only person she really had left. Oh, the others were very kind to her, but they'd never love her the way Cosim did.

She'd come to the conclusion that if he ever confessed that he needed to run in order to be free, then she'd go with him if possible. She wouldn't be with the Ragtags without him, and she had no reason to stay without him.

At the moment, though, she was peacefully waiting for him in their usual spot--she'd gotten accustomed enough to her surroundings that she could find the truck on her own (of course, she didn't know that she was never truly 'on her own' these days--though at the moment, the Ainu who was supposed to be watching her had gotten distracted by a certain Austrian--). He was a little late today, but not so much that she was worried.

As she waited, sitting on the edge of the tailgate, she listened closely for his footsteps as she swung her legs back and forth absently.

Paved with Good Intentions [Cosim/Public] Empty Re: Paved with Good Intentions [Cosim/Public]

Post  DIDNEY WORL Wed Jul 06, 2011 11:07 pm

What a metaphor he was at the moment (of course, how would he know. That type of thought wasn't his forte). Where was he walking? He didn't know. Just away. Away from the scene where he was forced to face himself. Yet, he had torn the paper off of its nail and had carried it with him. How was he to get away from what frightened him when he wouldn't let go of it?

He decided for a moment (and after about the 5th person had waited to see if he would move out of their way and had lost the gamble painfully) he would just push it to the back of his mind, and go about his day like he usually did. Like he should have. He already missed that not thinking that came with doing everything the same way every day.

He checked a watch hanging up from a tent pole (that had been pilfered from a paying customer by some of the carnival's sneakier children that now the whole lot of them used to keep the time) and realized how far his useless, senseless (or so he liked to believe) thinking had pushed him off schedule. Five minutes late to see Sonya. That was five minutes less he would get to. It wasn't as if they had that much time together (that she knew of, anyways) after all, they were both sequestered to different places in the evening, and had work during the day. Time wasn't a thing to waste.

So he ran (as much as he could carry himself with his weight and his lungs, which had never quite functioned correctly) to prevent further time lost and perhaps to shake off the last dregs of that feeling of uncommon dread that had haunted him from the crumpled wanted poster in his pocket. It just didn't seem to go away. Well, Sonya always had a knack for making all his thoughts of her. Hopefully today would be no different. He finally came to a wheezing stop, one hand on her leg to tell her, since his words were indeciferable at the moment, "Here I am". "Sorry... Late--" Was all that could come from him.

Honestly, not being able to see any clocks, she didn't have much of a concept of time anymore unless she asked someone for it. But even if that weren't true, the five minutes probably wouldn't have distressed her quite as much--after all, at the moment, she wasn't thinking about his criminal record or anything consequential that may come of it. Just how they had all the time in the world together.

She perked up immediately upon hearing his approach--faster than usual, confirmed when he arrived gasping for breath. Immediately, she was worried, but...at the same time, she couldn't help but smile now that he was there.

With one hand on the one he had on her leg, she reached up with the other one to brush his bangs from his face (she knew from experience by now that they tended to fall over the left side) before cradling it in her palm. "It's okay," she murmured before kissing his forehead (a place she rarely got to reach while standing on the ground) and the bridge of his nose, smiling with her lips still pressed to it, "Don't forget to breathe..."

Maybe that was the appeal of time with her-- the fact that time didn't seem to matter. All the same he couldn't help but feel a loss over those 5 minutes. It didn't seem to matter to her, not that it ever did.

Warmth flooded through him as she moved his hair out of his eyes. Even in her blindness she could take care of him while he was often in the farthest place from himself. It brought him back to his worries though-- how many more times like this would he get?

But she gave him an order which set him to other things-- 'don't forget to breathe'. Which he often did around her. After a few moments his breathing finally slowed, and he got into the truckbed with her. Immediately he pulled her into his lap and set his lips to her hair. "I thought about you alot today." Not unusual, but it was better than thinking about the surprise he'd found posted out by the entrance.

As she waited for his respiratory system to calm, she kissed him just a few more times, lightly, shifting her hands so that she was holding both of his. It wasn't often that he was running around like this; when he did, however, she noticed that he seemed to lose his breath quickly. She couldn't know why, but she wished he would be more cautious about it--at least as cautious as he was with her, and her problems.

But, in the end, he got over it as he always did, and she was quickly drawn to him.

Resting against him as he grazed her hair with his lips, she tilted her head up once to kiss him properly on the lips before inquiring, "What kind of thoughts? I was thinking about you today, too." But then again, she always did.

He played with her hands absently as he thought. She was always in his thoughts but he was hardly poetic enough to verbalize them. And the other thing concerning her-- would she leave with him if he had to? Could he leave? Would he let her stay if she wanted? Deciding that was best for later, he tried his best to say something in his mind right.

"What kinds of thoughts? I don't know... how beautiful you are, mostly. And that I'll get to have the most beautiful woman for the rest of my life." Which technically could only end up being for the foreseeable future. Not that he was going to divulge that to her-- ever. Holding her tighter and speaking into her neck with a joking growl, he added, "And well the others-- I am a man, aren't I?"

Pulling back with one final kiss on her cheek over her burns, he decided to get the subject off of him. Well, directly off of him, anyways, when she said she thought of him, too. "Really? Care to share?"

Paved with Good Intentions [Cosim/Public] Empty Re: Paved with Good Intentions [Cosim/Public]

Post  nahn-SEK-wuh-tuhr Thu Jul 07, 2011 11:07 pm

Listening carefully as he divulged his thoughts to her, she couldn't help but smile and blush when he called her beautiful. She wasn't sure if she'd ever get quite accustomed to it, and she wasn't sure if she ever wanted to. Each time, it made her fall for him all over again. And when he reminded her how they'd spend the rest of their lives together, it brought a kind of comfort and security that she'd never had before. (She didn't like to think that there could ever be a way that it wouldn't happen--she reminded herself that, no matter how cliche it may sound, she'd follow him to the ends of the earth if that's what it took to run from the law.)

He held her closer, and she giggled at his closing statement as the heat rose to her face. Freeing herself just enough from his grip to lean up to kiss him (just once, but more deeply than before), she said simply, quietly, "I love you."

And then it was her turn. Settling back down, she paused to think for a moment before beginning, softly, "I thought about how very, very lucky I am that you found me. And how I don't feel so alone when I'm with you." Reaching up to place her hands on his shoulders indicatively, she continued with a smile, "How handsome you are, to my eyes..." Her 'eyes' shifted to wrap around his back so that she could pull herself up closer to murmur into his ear, "And the rest...I'm your lover, aren't I?"

Paved with Good Intentions [Cosim/Public] Empty Re: Paved with Good Intentions [Cosim/Public]

Post  DIDNEY WORL Thu Jul 07, 2011 11:42 pm

He was often asked, 'why her?'-- but of course, it wasn't 'her' they were really seeing, but her scars. And sure, there were women who had less scars-- no scars, even. But they weren't beautiful-- not to him. It was something in the way she smiled-- that someone who had been through so much would even grace people with a smile-- that set his heart racing and swelling with a feeling he couldn't begin to describe. And looking past the burns (even though he wholly accepted them and the strength it took to withstand the fires that caused them) she was... well, she was some kind of woman (Plus, she looked past his lack in eloquence--). And if no one else saw so, then that was fine with him.

And to top it all off-- she loved him. At first when he'd confessed to her that his feelings for her seemed alot like how love was supposed to feel, he wasn't sure. But he soon realized that it could be much more than he originally thought-- she taught him that, along with endless lessons on math and the universe (only the first would ever stick in his head, though).

But he was still afraid that at some point, she would find something better. He would never say so to her, but, as long as she allowed it, he would still be selfish. "And what if someone else found you-- would you love them, too?" He phrased it jokingly, but it had been formed in his mind completely seriously. But she quickly distracted him again, and, since she was some kind of woman, he was having trouble finding something else to trump that elusive guile that only presented itself when he was least prepared. "Who would have ever thought someone as shy as you would be..." He pretended to think for a moment, and then laughed, not able to keep a straight face. "...Ambitious." their public togetherness wasn't the only thing people talked about, or asked him about. More often than not (though probably just to annoy him), he would be asked, 'how does it work?' There was only so long he could humor the question until the inquisitors all got a punch to the face for an answer.

Paved with Good Intentions [Cosim/Public] Empty Re: Paved with Good Intentions [Cosim/Public]

Post  nahn-SEK-wuh-tuhr Fri Jul 08, 2011 4:04 pm

Would she love someone else if it hadn't been Cosim who found her? The question took her aback for a moment, and she had to think about it. "I can't be sure..." Certainly, she'd be grateful, and certainly she wouldn't be able to dislike them. But it was impossible to know unless it actually happened--although...what if it were Itakshir, or Arash, or one of the other men she knew from the carnival? No, she was certain she wouldn't fall in love with any of them. "No, even if they loved me, I wouldn't feel the same," she decided slowly, "But I would feel indebted...so I would just settle for them."

Kissing him on the neck, just under his ear, she concluded, "So I'm happy it was you." Another kiss. "So happy..." Who else but Cosim would have been so attentive, so caring? He didn't know as many things as her, but that was okay; the point was that he listened. For the first time in her life, she didn't feel so afraid to open up her world (rather, the world the way that she saw it) to someone else. For the first time, she wasn't alone with her perceptions. There was someone who knew them now, too. Someone who also cared. And she no longer feared dying alone with her world that no one else could see or care about.

...Of course, there was 'that', as well. Putting her hands to his chest, she pushed lightly (although, even if she pushed with all her might, it likely would have had little effect) so that he would lie down, with her leaning just over him. "But I'm not shy," she corrected, "Not with you."

Paved with Good Intentions [Cosim/Public] Empty Re: Paved with Good Intentions [Cosim/Public]

Post  DIDNEY WORL Fri Jul 08, 2011 4:37 pm

"At least you haven't realized you're still settling, yet," He laughed lightly. It was as if a weight had been lifted off of him. For the longest time he had wondered if he had somehow made her love him-- like she had no decision, for who else did she have to turn to? But he had to remind himself, she didn't have to love him, she didn't even have to say so if she felt differently. "But that's my secret."

She loved him and she was happy, Cosim repeated in his mind, stroking her hair as her kisses reiterated her feelings. He didn't know much about what her life was like before, he supposed she didn't like to talk about it, so he never asked. The past wasn't something he felt mattered-- for anyone. (Well-- unless it was one of the people that chose to mistreat her) Now she was happy, and that was all that mattered.

He fell back as she pushed him, trying to keep himself from laughing. "You're too confusing," he grinned, holding her hands and pulling her down farther so that he could kiss her.

"Keep it a secret; I won't believe it, anyways," she replied dismissively, though through a small smile. He still seemed to have no idea just how good he was to her. But there was maybe something about that in itself that was charming about him.

Giggling as he took her hands, she kissed him back, letting her body rest fully on top of his. "Should I be more direct?" She inquired after breaking off, only to resume with twice the zeal. Removing her hands from his, she placed them around the sides of his face so that she could weave them in and out of his hair. Slowly, she was beginning to draw her leg up his side--when suddenly, it brushed against his pocket, and the crinkle of paper met her sensitive ears. Surprised (when did he ever carry paper on him, after all?), she reached down instinctively to investigate. It only took a second of feeling about to realize what and where the sound had come from. Pulling out the wanted poster, oblivious to it's nature, she smoothed it between her hands, and inquired curiously, "What's this?"

Paved with Good Intentions [Cosim/Public] Empty Re: Paved with Good Intentions [Cosim/Public]

Post  DIDNEY WORL Sat Jul 09, 2011 12:34 am

"Well, it's only a secret to you," He explained as she kissed him back, but found it harder to gather words as the kisses got deeper and his hands decided they wanted to do the talking instead. "Everyone knows... you're much too good for me..." If there was anything more eloquent waiting to be said he couldn't remember it.

...Which was why he had no explanation for the paper as she drew it from his pocket. He was again face to face with himself, a man who certainly shouldn't have been allowed around such a woman-- or society in general. Before living with these people, things were cut and dry. But his best friend was a womanizer (though it seemed like he was losing his touch lately)... and was also not altogether awful, but actually quite a good, honest, and trustworthy man. He was beginning to see that nothing was as black and white as he wanted, decisions couldn't be made so easily... especially not concerning human life. Not that he regretted killing... he was just hesitant to do it again. He'd look like a hypocrite.

She would know that he had no reason to carry around paper. He didn't read. He didn't write. Not to mention the blotchy ink of the photograph warped and raised the paper it was printed on. "Paper?" He failed to keep his voice at the right pitch. "Oh... that-- that... is a... checklist. For what I had to do today." Even though he knew his routine like the back of his hand. "I need it, so..." Gently, he reclaimed the paper, and crumpled it up again.

Post  nahn-SEK-wuh-tuhr Sat Jul 09, 2011 3:12 pm

The paper was pulled from between her fingers, the bumpy surface of the picture sliding across her skin almost in slow motion, a shoddy excuse given for it's existance. "There's a picture on it..." she guessed slowly, "Or...something big." Something that took up a significant portion of the page, that was certainly not writing.

"What's wrong, Cosim?" She asked, hesitantly. She knew him well enough to know that something wasn't right with the way he was talking. The words he'd just spoken moments ago rang in her head: "Everyone knows you're much too goid for me..." It reminded her (for otherwise, she didn't see it) that he was, in fact, a criminal. Her heart seemed to drop and leap at the same time.

"What's wrong?" She asked again, more nervously.

Post  DIDNEY WORL Sat Jul 09, 2011 6:33 pm

He tried to get his mouth to form the words, 'nothing is wrong, you shouldn't worry,' but what was his love for her worth if he could only lie? He stayed silent for a minute, crinkling the paper, smoothing it out, waiting to see if the man on the paper would tell him what to say.

Finally, Cosim decided that he would just read the paper, and let t decide how this would all end. So, he took hold of her hand and put her fingers over the raised ink, first over the photo. "This," He explained quietly, almost as if he didn't believe it himself. "is a photo of me."

Moving her hand to the print, he skimmed her small fingers across the large forboding letters. "Wanted," He finally began reluctantly, "dead or alive... For the murder of six innocent men..." the final bit he added with visible chagrin, and could barely speak it over a whisper. "in cold blood."

He left the paper in her hands, and waited for the tears to start flowing. He didn't know if there was a way he could stop them, this time. What else was there for reassurance?

As soon as he put her fingertips to the photo and explained what it was, her blood seemed to run cold, starting with her heart and seeping into her veins from there. It was as though her body knew something was terribly, terribly wrong before her mind could even catch up. But she wouldn't have to wait long to learn the significance of the photo on the page.

Wanted. Dead or alive.

Dead.

Dead...

Dead...

She wasn't sure if she even heard the rest of the poster's contents. She must have, because she knew he said it, but it didn't register nearly so much as that one simple word. Rather, that one simple thought. The thought that Cosim might die. That people were out looking for him because they wanted him to die. They were going to take him away so that they could kill him. The feeling was perhaps more horribly familiar than it ever, ever should have been.

Her face seemed to be frozen in a mask of horror--so much so that the tears that pooled in her eyes couldn't, for once, spill out. Voice barely a whisper, it shuddered and cracked with fear and grief and a loss that had yet to happen, and yet felt like it already had. "No...don't leave me..." Some notion from her dreams swam around in her head: when people left, they didn't come back.

Post  DIDNEY WORL Sun Jul 10, 2011 10:28 am

He waited for the tears to start falling, for something familiar that he knew how to handle. He had never seen her look so afraid. Not even over him dying, it seemed. Just over him leaving. There was something deeper at work in her mind.

He tried to brush it off, like he always did, to see her smile in the end, to make everything better like usual. "Sonya..." Gathering her into his arms again, he took the paper and ripped it to pieces, and placed the rough slivers into her hands. "Nothing will ever take me away from you." If he could run from the law from this long, he was sure he could keep it up. But one thing still weighed on his mind.

"There might be a time... When I would have to leave..." he had to make himself say it. "to stay alive. And if that happens... I'd want you to come with me..." because he hated to be away from her almost as much as she would hate his absence-- but perhaps there was more involved in her fear.

He ripped up the paper, but she'd never been able to see it, to begin with. It's foreboding message remained in her mind, just as the threat remained in reality. He said nothing could ever take him away, but how could he be sure? He was one man--no matter how strong--versus a faceless, nameless, numerous force: the law. And the law was not kind, it wouldn't take pity just because he'd fallen in love. It wouldn't hold back just because he would now himself become a victim; someone that would be grieved over.

If she were able to see, she might have stared down at the scraps of paper in her hands, but as it was, she just stared off into nothingness. That is, until he mentioned that he might have to leave the carnival. She stiffened, the shreds of the wanted poster fluttering out of her grasp.

It was difficult to find her voice, "Of course--I have to come, I..." Words were failing her, she sobbed once or twice, but again the tears wouldn't fall, "I need you..." As much in her everyday life as emotionally. She couldn't go back to a life alone, she might as well go back to the freakshow. Controlling herself as best as she could, she managed to squeak, "Where would we go?"

He supposed she'd felt the same way before, but this was the first time he'd heard it with his own ears. Feeling something like anguish (over the fact that he was physically necessary) mixed with heart-swelling breath-catching love, he leaned down and kissed her forehead protectively. "If I didn't feel the same I wouldn't want to take you with me..." If he didnt need her as much as he did, she would be safer staying with the carnival.

Where would they go? "I... I don't know..." He began into her hair, trying to calm her down. "To the west, where there isn't law... Or to the east where the law is too busy to find me..." Then, somberly, "But if we leave, I suppose we won't be 'anywhere' for a while. But we'll see. Maybe we won't have to leave at all..."

Sometimes he figured she told him what she wanted enough to keep her surviving, but not what she wanted enough to keep her as happy as she could be. If they did have to run, he would continue on aimlessly, never staying in one place. But since she would be with him... "the risk should be worth the end-- I couldn't leave a place you enjoy for somewhere worse. What..." How to word it. "What life would you most like to live?"

Paved with Good Intentions [Cosim/Public] Empty Re: Paved with Good Intentions [Cosim/Public]

From what she understood about this country, she already knew that the West sounded more favorable, as far as safety went. It sounded like it was almost completely deserted in some areas. But then, they would have to worry about basic necessities, like food, water, and shelter. On the other hand, the east would be easier to live in, but was crowded and full of people. And many people was always, without question, far more dangerous than few people.

He said that maybe they wouldn't have to leave, and she would have liked to believe that. But she wouldn't count on it. And she supposed she never would, for as long as there was law, it would be after him, wouldn't it?

And what life would she most like to live?

"A happy one," she whispered immediately, with more than just a hint of sadness in her voice. It was a tall order. But most of the time lately, it had been filled. "I'm happy here," she continued, "But I wouldn't be if you left--so I think of course, I'll be happiest with you. Even if it's somewhere I wouldn't be happy, otherwise." Granted, he'd probably been looking for a bit more of a specific answer than that, so she thought a moment longer and added, "Somewhere with a lot of trees...or fields. Or both, if they have that here." As though both trees and fields was asking too much of this country she barely knew outside of the carnivals.

After a moment's silence, she noted quietly, "I'm from the city, you know...but I grew up on a farm." She smiled, just barely, "There were a lot of fields." It seemed so strange that he might not know these simple facts about her upbringing, but she supposed she never really had told him.

Paved with Good Intentions [Cosim/Public] Empty Re: Paved with Good Intentions [Cosim/Public]

He listened, sometimes barely able to hear her whispering. Did she really think he would keep her somewhere she wouldn't be happy? He smiled a bit... Until she murmured that she was already happy. He was taking her away from somewhere she had finally found happiness. But what could he do? He wouldn't leave her, even though she said she wouldn't be happy without him... he didn't totally believe it.

But now that she'd told him what she wanted in a life, he wouldn't stop looking until he found it... Although was that really hard to find? He didn't know. He only knew what he heard from other convicts he'd known that had supposedly traveled there. "You'll be happier than you ever have been before." He assured quite seriously. "I heard there there's no drought-- but it's sunny all year. There's trees that go all the way to heaven and mountains that go even higher..." She would never be able to see it if it was true, but if that was what she thought was nice then that's what it would be. "And I'm sure there's a field somewhere around." He added, smiling into her temple before kissing it lightly.

It surprised him that as much as they'd known each other then... The before was a mystery. He supposed he could have asked but... It seemed like something that upset her. "I didn't know that..." He replied just as quietly. He himself had bounced from home to home as a child... He didn't remember much. So what would he tell her, if she asked? "But i'll find it for you again."

Paved with Good Intentions [Cosim/Public] Empty Re: Paved with Good Intentions [Cosim/Public]

Smiling, she replied, eyes closed, "Well, you know...the way I see it, all trees go up to heaven." (Rather, the way she couldn't see it.) "So, will you tell me which ones go up to space?" Giggling slightly, she kissed him back--on the lips--and settled against him comfortably.

"You know, I never would have imagined," she murmured dreamily in something almost like awe, "That someday, I'd be rescued from a horrible place by the man of my dreams--literally, of my dreams," she laughed a little, "And that we'd fall in love in a traveling carnival, then maybe run away together..." It seemed like something straight from a novel, really, in retrospect.

And yet, it was hard to tell if the genre was Realism or Romanticism. Certainly, the way she'd just worded it sounded very fantastical, but... The fact still remained that she was sightless and covered in burns, and that the conditions she'd suffered through at Mistique were anything but romantic. And he was, despite everything, still a man convicted of murder, and risked being put to justice for it. Even the dreams themselves, which they both suffered from, brought the disquieting notion that all was not as it seemed in the world they thought they knew.
A world that, should they try to escape into, would likely not be quite as kind as one would like to imagine. She could pretend that all trees were touched by heaven, and that some even reached out to dip their leaves into the cosmos...

But reality was a hard thing to close one's eyes to, even for the blind.

Paved with Good Intentions [Cosim/Public] Empty Re: Paved with Good Intentions [Cosim/Public]

She seemed to finally be at ease. He was afraid for a while that what he'd told her would make her scared forever-- and maybe she still was, but at least he could finally relax. Accepting the kiss with a grin, he returned the gesture and replied, like usual, "You know I'd climb to the top of every last one and see. And when I found them, I'd build a ladder and take you with me." He would do anything to make her happy, no matter how worried she was about him or how much she didn't want him to go to the trouble. And he was positive he wasn't any good at climbing trees. But he would.

The man of her dreams? Had she ever since childhood dreamed of a man who looked like him? Probably not. But he would take her word for it. "You think I ever thought I'd be stealing a gorgeous woman away from an awful place-- one that would fall in love with me, too," The latter he thought was impossible before, but it happened. "And work at a carnival just to stay with her?" The fact still remained, whether she knew it or not, that without her he would have been there and gone when the convoy reached the next town. She prevented him from going too far into his crimes--prevented him from crime altogether. Something had to be said for a woman like that. "And now I don't think that it was me rescuing her, more the other way around." After all, all he could really credit to himself was carrying her out of the place. That's the way he saw it.

As if he had been thinking the same thing-- after all, he hadn't faced reality before, only fought violently against it-- he said softly, reassuringly, "Far enough away from here, we could be anything we want." Not carnies, not criminals... They could just be themselves. He suspected that was what she most wanted. "It'll take a while but you'll be happy... I promise."
