All Things Great and Small [Mace&Hyrcania/Public]

Post  Major Glory on Sun May 08, 2011 1:56 pm

The Iranian boy glared at his tiger that was perched on top of a pile of potatoe sacks, almost as if it was lazily taunting its trainer with each sluggish tail flick. Faraz was just the opposite, rushing this way and that behind the patched-up curtain that divided the makeshift kitchen from the confection booth where his mother made each and every dish from scratch. There were few people there to assist the process, less to volunteer a helping hand, and none who would work for free. The tiger was pretty much just for show since it attacted a decent crowd to the food booth, so Alexis let it stay as long as it didn't move. No need to start a panic about a loose tiger. Heaving a plump bag of deli meat onto his back, Faraz slipped a slice or two to his pet who inhaled it without moving an inch.

"Faraz! Stop feeding that mooching, over-sized barn cat and help you mother!"

The son jolted and fumbled with the heavy bag, rushing past the boxes of supplies to the Macedonian woman who was cutting squares of turkish delight and distributing them to hungry customers. "I'd make you pen up that thing if I didn't need the extra help," the Slavic woman scolded the boy who scratched circles in the dirt with his shoe. "Dont mope; go make some sandwiches, alright?" She pushed his bangs out of his face, her own hair drenched with sweat beneath the kerchief. "Can you do that for me, bebe?" He nodded slightly and darted back behind the curtain. Sighing, the woman's attention returned to some sneaky customers who thought they could nab a few bites before paying, but not before being introduced to a swift spatula to the wrist.

"That boy! Always the problem with children, right?" She chuckled to her customers as she kneaded some pastry dough. "They want to play around, and never pay attention. But they can tell what they want from what they need, yes?" Alexis sometimes worried if she pushed him around too much, but tough love bred strong boys who became strong men. It was her job as a mother, and she wouldn't trade it for the world. Still, she couldn't help but feel guilty about not being there after he was born. Not witnessing his first steps, first words, all the formative years were a mystery except for what she had heard from his half-brother which was not all that great. It was a horrible shame for Alexis, listening to the bitterness in Arash's voice. She tried to avoid him at all costs, but always offered to lend a hand when working. His mother, oh, the Macedonian veritably disappeared whenever she was in the area. Arash's mother was more Faraz's caretaker than Alexis had been to him since they reunited at the carnival. It was too much of a coincidence and too much of a reminder of how careless Alexis had been, so self-centered and promiscuous she had been in her youth as a traveling performer. She knew better now how her actions led to the fragmentation of a once stable family, but she tried to convince herself otherwise, that she was just a fraction of a larger chain of events. But her son was a living reminder of her past, and a miniature version of his father. That brought some comfort to her, at least he didn't show any animosity towards her. Indifference was fine, perfect even, as long as she never left his side again.

Her swift hands exchanged uncooked sweets for the steaming ones from the brick oven. Collecting the money in one swoop, the Macedonian counted it and locked it in the small safe under the counter. "Ma! Maman!" Faraz nudged the curtain away with his large tray of sloppily stacked sandwiches. "Ready when you are," he announced as his tiger peeked out from under the cloth, licking its jaws in satisfaction. Alexis laughed in spite of herself, wrapping the last few snacks until the remaining patrons dispersed. "Here, you've earned this," she murmured as she tossed him a tuna sandwich with a few cubes of the candy she had cut earlier. "Thanks for helping mama work, meba. Te sekam." She kissed his dirt-smeared forehead and pushed him out of the cantina. "You can go play now, if you like. Be careful!" The boy and his pet simultaniously leapt up and ran out of the small tent, but not before Faraz rushed back and hugged his mother's waist before darting back into the alleyways of the circus. Alexis was stunned for what seemed like several seconds before a smile crept across her face. "That boy."

(( I guess this would constitute as a Mother's Day drabble. I wanted to use Mace more so I guess today was as good as time as any lmao. Open RP, if you want? XD))

"HEY-- GET BACK HERE--"

Emiliana had been caught, for once, in the act of picking a pocket. It didn't even pay off; just some loose change and lint. But it didn't matter if she'd stolen a dollar or a million once she'd been caught. And she wasn't about to go down without a fight. The fight seemed to be a little one-sided, though. It was a good thing she was an adequate runner-- though not the most agile. Tripping and rolling and automatically springing into a run again, with a fist full of dimes she shoved past Faraz with a "He did it!" (not fooling anyone) and made a break for the confection stand.

Finally she rolled behind the counter, landing headfirst into the Macedonians shoes. It was hot money-- she couldn't be seen with it. "How much would give me for this?" She opened her hand and a few coins spilled through her fingers. If The older woman was worried about not being there for her son, Emiliana's mother had to be worried about where her daughter had run off to, next.

Arash had been...a little different in the past few days- well, he felt a little different. He had been invited to go to Mystique, by that Egyptian girl! He had never been invited to do anything by a girl before. Now, he just had to go. He was nervous, though. What if he screwed up? What if something happened to him in Mystique? Itakshir had to come along, to prevent anything bad from happening. But he now seemed to be busy with some prostitute he picked up. (Arash automatically assumed the girl was a prostitute. She looked like one.) Arash was not going to mention it while the prostitute was there. But now, every time he spotted Itakshir he was with that prostitute.

The scenario made him anxious- so he did what he had to do to calm his nerves. Sat in a state of vegetation for a while, to smoke his opium. He had been doing that a lot lately. Even more than usual. So when he emerged from the smokey car, his nerves were healed, and he was in one of his cherished highs. He felt good. He was happy, he was relieved--

That was until he realized somebody was picking some money out of his back pocket. That snapped him back to some sense of reality. It had been a few hours since the high began- and it was probably the time for it to wear off. He was especially cranky when he was coming down from the high.

"GET BACK HERE!" He shouted, running through the crowd, despite his recently impaired motor skills. He ran in to a number of people. And then Faraz suddenly showed up in his path. Automatically, Arash threw the boy to the ground. Faraz had some part in this.

"I- You'll get something for this...later!" He slurred out to his little brother, as he ran forward to the confection stand. That was where the girl was heading. He shoved through the crowd to reach her. She was trying to get rid of the money.

"You filthy little thief!" he grabbed one of her pigtails. "You- You'll go to hell for this! And you too for letting her-" Arash stopped when he realized who the woman was that he was about to address. A scowl crossed across his face. His eyes, slow with pupils constricted, grew alert when they glared at the woman who may as well been the reason for his family's ruin.

"She stole my money. You- you're not supposed to shelter thieves."

((Ffff, hope i'm allowed to make Arash the victim man))

Re: All Things Great and Small [Mace&Hyrcania/Public]

Post  Major Glory on Sun May 08, 2011 8:08 pm

Faraz felt content for once. He considered himself lucky, for a bastard child anyway. That was what Arash called him, but Faraz just shrugged it off as jealousy. He had two mothers, although the surrogate one he held in slightly more esteem than his biological mother. Still, it wasn't a bad thing to be doted on by two women, especially at the expense of his brother. It was all his brother's fault anyway. Sure Alexis had left long before Faraz had any solid memory of her, but at least the Macedonian hadn't completely abandoned him and had taken responsibility of him. It was a welcome change especially since Alexis was a pretty leniant parent, except when it came to academics which she was fervent about.

The boy hadn't even turned the corner before the thunder of feet sent him reeling backwards, and then a hard shove finalized the tumble. Disoriented but not incapacited, Faraz heard the voice of a girl followed by that asshole he was forced to call a brother who smelled like opium- big surprise. "Hey! Hey, why is everything my fault? I'm not done with you!" He took off after the girl with the pig-tails and his brother. The chase eventually led back in the direction of his mother's booth, but the Iranian child was too angry to even care. In a blind rage, he tackled Arash's legs from under the young man. "Teach you to push me again!" And the fight was on.

------------------

Alexis sighed and slouched on the box. It was a relief to know that Faraz could take care of himself. Fishing through the front of her blouse, the older woman pulled out a pack of cigarettes. They were nothing fancy but it was enough to get her through the day. She hadn't even had the chance to light one when a blonde girl tumbled onto her shoes. Alexis pulled her feet back, startled enough to drop her precious rolled tobacco. The girl shoved a fistful of loose change into her face, demanding what she could get for the pitiful sum.

Confusion drew up the Macedonian's face when the tell-tell shouts of "thief" reached her ears. "Little girl, I don't think--." Alexis didn't even have time to think when a sore sight for sore eyes yanked the child back by her yellow hair, yelling something about the two of them going to hell. That didn't bother Alexis; she knew that hell was more than likely a certainty after her death. She had gone too far to redeem now, even if she had turned over a new leaf. Instinctively, Alexis swatted the man's hands away with maternal force and drew the girl towards her. "You! What the hell is wrong--?!" Another interruption, this time by a cursing a and spitting Faraz tackling Arash with considerable force.

To be frank, Alexis was beyond pissed. Taking off her striped apron, she flogged both of the young men with it until she was sure to have left marks. She didn't let go of the thief girl either, but her grip didn't indicate any harm- yet. "Stop it right now!" Alexis screeched at them, pulling her son and his brother apart. "You two are both miserable! Is this how a family should behave? Hell no! Dust yourselves off and get in that kitchen- you too Goldilocks!- I will not be spoken to in such a manner, nor will I have children- innocent or no- beaten in front of me!"

She dragged the girl and Arash behind the counter and rolled down the curtains to separate the startled bystanders who wanted a free show. Faraz needed no persuasion as he ducked under the tables and sat down on the potatoe pile farthest away from his irate mother and half-sibling, holding his tiger whose fur was on edge from anxiety. Alexis shook as she tried to light a second cigarette, pulling out another to smoke as well. The rush of nicotine soothed her nerves, but not her anger. Bringing the smokes away from her mouth, she eyed each culprit carefullly. "I'm not sure what exactly happened, but I want answers. Starting with you," Alexis pointed to the blonde girl. She seemed familiar, and the one sentence she said to Alexis earlier was spoken with an accent similar to her own. "Who are you, child? Have we met, and are you a part of this circus?" Too many questions one would think, but it was a start.

(( lmao oh man mama bears unite! XD You can if you'd like~ <3))

If there was anything Emiliana knew from where she came from, it was how to fight back. She didn't want to drop the money, and putting it into her pocket would be too risky. She didn't have the free hand to grab the pushpin from said pocket and flail around with it to see where it landed on her aggressor, so immediately her second instinct set her to lash out with her teeth. But she was yanked away right as her jaw snapped shut.

"Thank goodness, Doamnă!" She feigned innocence, even though she saw the woman knew better. "He was gonna kill me! You see his eyes!" She remembered her brother looked like that often before they were separated. It would never be a sight she'd be used to.

But, to her chagrin, they were ushered next to each other into the back. Glaring, she considered the woman's queries, chewing on her tongue. "Emiliana's Ionescu." She muttered. "My Mami works here." Somewhere under that tough exterior was a voice saying, "please don't tell her I still steal". "Whatever I take I keep for her. We don't have alot." It was the same with everyone else, but with the amount of grief her mother dealt with, she could stand to have some financial security, no matter how small.

The confection stands were busy today, weren't they? Nicoleta stood in line of one particular booth, waiting for her turn. She never usually bought sweets unless it was a special occasion but seeing Dimitrie for that brief time had put her in an unusually good mood for the last few weeks.

Not that it would last long.

A sudden burst of commotion perked the Romanian's interest and she watched as her very own daughter followed by a rather sketchy looking man, also followed by a young boy, ran into the stand before her. Shouts of 'thief' and commands forced Nicoleta to push through the line, up to the front where she saw Emiliana be yanked by the hair.
"Hey- HEY! Get your hands off my daughter!" Luckily, the woman working the booth seemed to have authority over the creep. Unluckily, the woman had also pulled the young girl to the back with the other two. Nicoleta hurried around the side and into the kitchen, a sudden surge of anger rising in her.

"Emiliana!" She grabbed the child and pulled her close to her bosom. She then held her away and gave a good swat to the girl's cheek. "What do you think you are doing?! Are you trying to give me a heart attack?! Wait until your father hears this- Causing such a scene!"

Golden eyes flickered up the older woman, an apologetic yet stern frown forming. "I am so so sorry miss- I didn't mean for her to cause so much havoc. Did she steal from you? What happened?" Her questions were then followed with her glaring holes into the man. "And you- you." She pointed at him accusingly. "What gives you the right to hurt my child?"

Arash was pushed back by his nasty little brother's sudden tackle. It hit him so suddenly, that it took him a while to gain his breath and stability back. Of course, it was so quickly taken away when that house wrecking bitch, dare felt like she had the authority to beat Arash with her apron. It would have hurt much worse, was it not for the fact that Arash's nerves were so delayed. He didn't even have time to say anything, before he was dragged somewhere else. He was being yelled at. The girl was accusing him of something, he took that tone from her voice. However, his English, which had always been a little less than perfect, was also delayed. He began to feel dizzy.

Another woman soon followed. As soon as she entered, she also began shouting words of accusation at Arash. The emotion was all he needed to get the gist of it. He was being blamed here, why? Because he chased after some thief who so wrongly stole his money.

He was not even thinking when his hands went out to shove the Romanian woman away. It was a somewhat lazy shove, but the intent was obviously forceful. A frown creased over his face, while his slowed eyes focused to a glare at her.

"D-don't you talk to me like that, filthy woman! Your child- she, she stole my money- all of it from me! She....She deserves to be executed for that! A-and you too for protecting her!" He slurred out. These were words that just flew out. Somehow, they completely missed the process where they had to run through his brain for approval.

"A-and-" The disoriented man turned to the Macedonian. "You- don't you touch me any- ever again, t-too!" he jabbed one of his thin and burnt fingers to her chest. "You're not my mother! You're not anyone in my family! Just a filthy woman, who- who stole my father away from the woman he really loved-" and he pushed her too, not hard enough to do anything. "And then left your stupid child!" All his anger, anger that he formerly directed towards the Macedonian, came back for Faraz. His sleepy eyes shifted towards the place of the boy.

"You- you bastard, I'm going to kill you!" A shout, and the Iranian lunged for him. Holding him by the shirt, the older boy shoved the younger's head into the wall.

"Y-you little shit! I told you to respect me!" And another shove. So much motion had left Arash feeling so dizzy. Overwhelmingly so. Things didn't seem to be in the right place anymore. The next shove was not much. "Y-you filthy boy, don't ever steal from your older brother! Don't ever treat me--" his words were slurring more and more together, as he spoke. He felt dizzier and dizzier. His head flashed to the side. A stream of vomit rushed out of Arash's mouth. His grip on Faraz became weak. But he did not let go.

Re: All Things Great and Small [Mace&Hyrcania/Public]

Post  Major Glory on Mon May 09, 2011 5:54 pm

Alexis could have sworn the migraine she was suffering from could have been registered on the Richter scale. The little girl tried to play off her obvious theft, but Alexis wasn't buying it. "Yes, sweetheart, I see his eyes; and I know exactly what caused it," Alexis shot a particularly nasty glare at the young man in question. She was about to reprimand the girl, keeping considerable distance between the belicose Iranian and her little fugitive, when who but the girl's mother show up. Alexis surrendered the child without question, hardly flinching when the mother delivered a heavy slap to her sticky-fingered child. She would have done the same thing had it been her child. At least the girl had a mother; Alexis was too busy to take care of all the urchins that had absconded to the Ragtags.

"No, she didn't take anything from me," Alexis addressed the haggard woman who didn't look far from her own age, "she did take a nasty tumble though, but she seems to be alright." She didn't have to look behind her to see Arash's glassy eyes trying to focus enough to stare her down. "Is this the sort of condition you deem presentable?" The Macedonian returned the sparse amount of coins to Arash. He was showing the tell-tale signs of opium addiction, which Alexis herself was quite familiar with. "Stole all of your money? Even as little as us performers earn, I know for a fact you are paid more than this!" She shoved him away, disgusted with the knowledge that she had left her precious son in the hands of someone so irresponsible, even for her standards.

Of course, she had come to expect bitterness, if not by Faraz then by his older half-brother. Alexis stood stock still, glaring at him with flickering eyes. Weary and guilty-ridden, her shoulders heaved forth a sigh as she sat back down on the wooden crate. "You have every right to be angry," she whispered, not looking up from her feet until Arash's rage was unexpected swiveled to Faraz. Her head flew up when Faraz cried out in surpised at the speed that the older boy managed to gather despite being in such a hazy state of mind. Leaping from her seat, Alexis snatched her child away from Arash just shy of getting hit by the vomit. She buried Faraz's head behind her and backed away towards the Romanian woman and her child.

"Arash, you do have every right to be angry. Every right to hate me, but if you dare touch my child again-!" She couldn't finish her sentence, opting instead to spit in his face. If he did try to harm Faraz again, there was no doubt in Alexis' mind that she would beat Arash within an inch of his life. All he had to his name was Shahnaz and a chip on his shoulder. Alexis couldn't kill that sad excuse for a man on the floor, quivering and choking on his on bile. She couldn't help but feel responsible for the state he degenerated to. Sure, he had tried to kill her ex lover; and yes, he deserved to get exiled for attempted patricide, but his heart was in the right place from what she could understand. He loved his family, expressed regret for his actions, but channeled his emotions in the wrong directions. Arash was too impatient and eager to please. Perhaps that was why Alexis pardoned him so quickly- he reminded her of herself.

Faraz squrimed in his mother's arms, bruised and startled but fine. "Maman, Maman," he touched the side of her face, causing her to jump. "Maman, I'm okay. Can you, uh, put me down?" Alexis stared at him for a moment before nodding and gently lowering him to the ground. The boy slowly walked across to his brother, taking each step tentatively in case Arash decided to pull another surprise attack. But Arash was too weak from the combinded backlash of the opium and his own fatigue. Faraz nudged his brother's torso with his boot. Alexis struggled to comprehend what was going through the stone-faced kid's mind until he yanked down the curtain and placed it over his shivering brother. "Can he stay here until he feels better? I'll take him home when he does." Alexis was completely dumbfounded. She was so used to seeing Faraz strike out on his own that such a small act of compassion was almost beyond belief. The steely yet childish determination wasn't possible for her to refuse. "...Only until he is better, and then he leaves. You will stay will me until I say otherwise." She turned back towards the Romanian woman and her daughter.

"I am terribly sorry you had to go through with this. I've already made supper, and you are welcome to stay if you'd like. Arash won't bother you anymore tonight." She dragged Faraz's tiger towards the Iranian and put his head on the feline's back. "Stay," the Macedonian tied the rope around its collar to the tent's support beam. "Let me know if he tries to leave," she whispered to her son who still stood vigil beside his brother. Then Alexis motioned Nicoleta and Emiliana to the table where the leftover consession food was placed earlier. "I know it's not much, but I am more than willing to share. And let me know if you need anything."

She supposed she deserved that smack, but it still made tears sting at the edge of her vision. They were ready to spill over when her mother threatened-- no, promised, to tell her father what she'd done. How did emiliana expect a father to stay around for a delinquent child? She was about to beg, barter anything, for her mother to keep quiet. Her tough exterior crumbled under the glare of those golden irises.

That is, she was about to... Until, well, everything else happened. If she'd been insulted that way when she was alone, she would have burned with rage. Sheltered under her mother's arms, she was the child she really was. She heard a disgusting spurting noise (from the drugged man. She'd heard that sound before), a loud thump on the wall of the confection car, then yelling, then finally quiet.

Turning around, she saw the man she stole from lying on the ground with a curtain over him, his other two relatives acting as if nothing had happened. She was about to try and say... She didn't know what. This scene was all too familiar. But she was cut off by the promise of hot food, and she jetted into the car to see what she could stuff into her mouth first.

Nicoleta held Emiliana close to her side, away from the man. He was completely high out of his mind.

The woman watched as the other protected her own child and as the man threw his stomach contents onto the ground. It was a squeamish sight but any disgusted feeling soon swept away as his supposed younger brother came over to..comfort him? Certainly a heart warming, and at least things had calmed down. Nicoleta glanced up at the Macedonian as Emiliana escaped her over-bearing grip.

"Oh no no no...We're the burden here." She offered her a weak smile, looking back at the Iranian with an expression of slight pity. "If anything, I should be the one offering food for your troubles."

The Romanian followed behind the small girl, quickly placing her hands on her shoulders before she could dive into the food. "If anything..." She fished through her purse and pulled out a handful of change, holding it out. "Here. I'm sure she," A light shake of the child's shoulder. "took more than she let on."

Nicoleta's voice suddenly fell low, a frown growing on her worried face. "Will he..be okay...?" It was odd how she suddenly worried for the druggie's health when he had just tried to hurt her child. It was as if the whole situation was eerily familiar..

There he was, weak, and hunched over the floor. He still felt dizzy- he still struggled to get the rest of the vomit up. The taste lingered in his mouth, and his head felt light. He tried to swallow- but the opium left his thoat dry. He was hot earlier, but now he was cold- cold and shivering. The loud voice of the Macedonian women wrung through his ears. Then, his brother was over him. Arash tried to make some effort to swat the boy away, but it was half hearted.

Faraz did not respond with violence- as his older brother would have. He responded with... some form of affection. The boy dropped a curtain onto Arash, which he used to cover himself- and to assist in wiping off the vomit on his chin. His hazel eyes, eyes that could not focus on the boy- tried to focus on him. Arash felt some warmth of heart- and some guilt. Bruises again were forming on Faraz. And so soon, that feeling of anger was bubbling inside of him.

"Y-you never cared about Faraz before!" he slurred out to the Macedonian, pointing a shakey finger. "H-he's not your child! He's my father's child! And-- and my brother. You can't tell me what to do to him- because- because it's my duty to take care of him! You abandoned that duty... the-the first night you stole my baba from us!" Logically, that made no sense. But to Arash it did. That night, and this woman... destroyed his family.

"Faraz- he, come here-- Faraz...." The older Iranian's arms spread out for his little brother. He wanted to embrace him. He wanted to hold him close, and prove that he could be a good older brother. He wanted to give Faraz reassurance that Arash would be there when his Baba was not. He wanted to be that pillar of stability, that held up the rest of the house. That was his duty.

It didn't even occur to him that he was not keeping face. He was a mess, and this was in public. Opium always had a way of combining his private and public lives together. Those lives were destructive when they met.

Faraz made no further move towards his brother or mother. That didn't stop that Arash's words from hurting the boy emotionally. He was raised primarily by his father and his father's first wife who was as nice as nice could possibly be in spite of taking care of a child that wasn't hers. Faraz never actually knew his mother except from what his father (and less fondly by Arash) and one or two photographs. Faraz imitated his father's every move and motion, but was still somewhat uncomfortable around Alexis. She did leave him as a baby, and her "I was young and in love" excuse wore thin quickly, but her devotion to children in general had soothed his initial uncertainty. People told Faraz that he was mature for his age, even though he just deemed it as a superior ability to listen. His Macedonian mother spoke often about her other children, most of whom lived in other countries, but she always made sure to tell him she loved him. After all she had done to make up for her past mistakes, Alexis reminded him that he wasn't a mistake, but a blessing as he brought responsibility back into her life. That made him feel a little bit better; it was certainly better than being called a bastard.

The young boy stared at his brother for a minute before heaving a sigh and lowering Arash's arms. "Don't move. The last thing we need is to have you coughing up whatever else you had for dinner the past week. Get some rest." It was very sad, more embarrassing than anything, to see him so strung out in public. Faraz hated Arash's addiction. It brought out the worst in everybody. He wasn't sure if he should label it as hypocrisy or weakness. In any case, Faraz lowered his brother's arms and returned to the kitchen to retrieve a plate of food. He brought the back to his sick brother and placed the sandwich next to Arash. "You can have some when you feel better. I'll tell your maman where you are after we eat." He pushed Arash back against his improvised, fur-covered pillow and pulled the leftover divider curtain to give him some privacy.

Alexis was busy pouring some fresh tea and preparing the side dishes. It was all she could do not to throw a plate at the Iranian man for exclaiming that she never loved Faraz. Of course she did. It was just the opium talking, just the opium and not her concience... She didn't turn to look at her son's care-giving, but smiled at the subtle kindness in his words. He was already sitting at the table in the chair closest to her when she returned. Mrs. Ionescu tried to offer her payment, but the Macedonian shook her head and pulled out chairs for the mother and daughter. "No thank you, but I appreciate the thought. I'm afraid this is all I can offer for the trouble, though." She laughed slightly as the Romanian's little girl eyed the food hungrily. Faraz stared at her warily, but relaxed as his mother sat down beside him. Once again, the Macedonian pulled out her half-empty box of cigarettes and lit one, expecting something to extinguish the precious stick of paper. "So I take it you are not from around these parts? I am from the Balkans, too." She extended her cigarette pack towards Nicoleta, "Do you want one?" It was a nice change of pace, having guests at the dinner table. Hopefully things would be peaceful for the remainder of the evening, God willing.

Her mother shaking her shoulder should have shamed her-- but all bets were off when she smelled food. And she wasn't about to give up what she stole. After all the victim proved well enough he wouldn't spend it wisely.

She immediately tore away from her mother and sat down on one of the seats provided. Nothing wrong with accepting hospitality, was there? Turning to her still uncertain mother, she grinned and popped a piece of the food in her mouth. It wasn't too bad. "Luaţi loc, mama," She almost ordered, but kindly. "She said so."

Every few moments she caught a glance at the boy. How could he forgive his brother so easily?

Nicoleta sighed and dropped the change back in her purse. She felt bad for accepting the woman's charity when obviously she had less than she did. And she only had one (or..two?) child.

She nodded her head and sat herself, as the Macedonian insisted, next to her daughter. Always the religious woman, the Romanian quickly bowed her head and folded her hands, whispering a quick prayer before looking up again. A slight smile grew on her face at the mention of the Balkans. Her home.

"Yes, Romania...and you?"

The more she talked to this woman, the more comfortable she felt. Not in a 'strangers warming up to eachother' sort of manner, but in a 'we've met before' situation. Nicoleta wondered if they did in fact meet before, it was certainly a possibility. The Ragtags were a good sized group, you'd get to know everyone eventually-

"Do you want one?"

She broke from her thoughts and grinned, shaking her head lightly. "Ah, no thank you." Alexis needed it more them more than she did anyways. Nicoleta's gaze moved from the box being presented to her to her daughter, who had taken notice of the boy. If she wouldn't break the ice, then 'mami' would have to do it for her.

"How old are you, dear?"

The Macedonian bowed her head for the moment, uttering her own prayer. "Romania? Is that so?" A toothy smile broke across Alexis' face. "I am from Macedonia, but my son here was born in Iran." She ruffled Faraz's hair affectionately, much to the boy's chagrin. "I came to the states to find a better job, a better life. There is too much fighting back in my country between the nationalists and the Kingdom of Serbia. It was too much for me to take, being poorer than poor and subjected constantly by the Serbians and Greeks and Bulgars." She exhaled in exhasperation, smoke drifting out her nostrils. "My children, my other children, have grown up and left for jobs in bigger cities. I have little else to offer them except what money I send home."

Alexis tapped the table thoughtfully. Mrs. Ionescu was no fresh face to Alexis. She had seen her several times since she had joined the Ragtags. It was the first time she had gotten the chance to sit down with the woman, but it seemed to natural to do so. Perhaps it was the fact that they were both native to the Balkans, but the deja vu was still heavy. Fate had a strange way of making strangers less strange. "And what a small world it is, I have a few Romanian relatives- distant as they may be- in my family*. They live in the mountains, so I don't get to see them as often. Who know? We could be distant cousins," she added with a soft smile and chuckle.

------------

Faraz was savoring the delicous pita bread and ajvar that his mother had concocted earlier. It was similar to what he at back home, his real home. He tried his best to ignore the girl's stares. She was too quiet and it unnerved him. Plus trying to blame the theft on him and nearly getting beaten for it hadn't quite flown over with him yet. Not by a looong shot. The Romanian woman finally addressed him about his age. He sipped some of his water and replied, "I'm twelve, ma'am. Almost thirteen." Faraz heard his mother chuckle and remark wistfully about how he'd "grown up so fast" or something. The Iranian boy looked at the woman's daughter and asked in turn, "what's her name and how old is she?"

She didn't exactly like the food like she did other foods she was more used to. What she wouldn't give to have a plate of mămăligă. But she was still stuck with petty change and foreign food in a car with no real ventilation. Bur everywhere was like that here.

She listened closely to the woman. Güzäl was a bulgar, wasn't she? Or was she a Turk? She didn't think even her "sister" knew what to call herself. Not Moldavian. Not by a longshot.

Faraz' question brought her back to present though. Making a face, she replied for her mother without looking at him. "I'm 11. My name is Emiliana, assface, you better remember it." Then she gave him a look. So he would remember it.

Faraz did a double take at the rude girl. Did she just call him an "assface?" Of all things, assface?! He wasn't supposed to hit girls lest the wrath of Arash and his mother combined fall on his shoulders. The boy settled for a venomous squint instead. "Will do, missy." He sat his food down and glared back at the girl until Alexis's hand swept across the back of his head.

"As you will remember your manners!" She muttered, "I'm sorry. It's been so long since we've had guests. Perhaps it is Faraz, not his tigers, that need to be kept on a leash." The lad murmured an apology and picked at the remainder of his food, still stealing angry glances at this Emiliana girl. She had hardly touched her food. The ungrateful rugrat. Alexis sighed and ran her fingers across her eyes. "So, Mrs. Ionescu," the Macedonian addressed her guest once more, "what is your job at the carnival? Do you or your daughter perform?" She wrapped an arm around Faraz. "My son and I are in occasional acts. I guess you could call it a family business," she added with a laugh.

((NOT AS LATE AS MEEEE-))

"Is that so?" The Romanian was beginning to relax, unfolding her hands from her lap. "A small world indeed..."

The warm smile she wore soon faded at her daughter's rather rude comment. If there was anything Nicoleta was particular about, it was making a good impression with people. That meant her children had to be extremely well-behaved and polite lest they face her wrath later on.

Or now.

Her hand swatted the back of the girl's head, following the Macedonian's actions to her own son. Nicoleta glowered at Emiliana, her voice was a venomous whisper. "Apologize to them both or I swear to God above I'll..." She trailed off from her threat. There was no need to go into specifics.

"Oh? Interesting- What is it you two do?" They were becoming chatty like two old women who hadn't seen eachother for days. Nicoleta didn't mind this at all. It was nice to have a friend within the circus, close in both family matters and home.

"I'm a contortionist.." The smile grew back. "Emiliana usually stays back with her older sister and father." Her thoughts than moved back to the mother and son. "I would love to see you two do your act sometime."

While the Macedonian silently approved of Nicoleta's swift disciplinary action, a smug snort escaped Faraz from Emiliana being taken down a peg. That earned him a likewise smack to the noggin once again. This time he kept his mouth shut, rubbing his sore scalp in an effort to soothe the pain. The little she-devil started it. "But mamannn!" He tried to protest, but the dark scowl on his mother's face shut down any further debate.

Alexis glowered at her son one last time before returning her attention to the Romanian lady. "That tiger you saw in the back room, that is Faraz's," Alexis stated as she stuffed out the cigarette butt on the sole of her shoe. "He's mine, but he doesn't have a name. Well, yet. Most of my other tigers don't." Faraz chimed in, eager to brag on his exotic pets. "I'm the best tiger trainer in the whole circus. Tigers are the most difficult animals to train, but they listen to me better for some reason."

Clearing her throat, Alexis took her time explaining her job. "I roll globes around the ring, mostly larger ones since they are easier to maneuver around than smaller ones. The littler ones are the kind that you have to walk very fast to keep up. I've been 'retired' from the circus for quite a while, but I had to find some form of work since I left Macedonia." She rubbed her rough palms together. "I incorporate any of the traditional dances that I remember into my acts, and occaisonally juggle."

Her son swayed back and forth in his seat, "She's really good, too!" He looked back at Emiliana, who was obviously ticked off at him for one reason or another. It was her fault she got smacked; and it was also her fault that he got backhanded across his head. This girl was most certainly some form of evil, he just knew it. She didn't even work, just steal and cause trouble for him. If it was trouble she found, it would be trouble she'd get.

Emiliana let out a loud hurt yelp as she was disciplined as usual. She was about to complain as well until she heard the familiar rasp in her mother's voice. Immediately she straightened up, lowered her head, and murmured a quiet "I'm sorry" to their hosts. She even began to eat the food again without a word.

That is, until Faraz opened his mouth. Tigers? It seemed too good to be true. Dropping her usual crudeness out of fear of consequence, she just made a face and said, "No way." She'd seen the tiger. But she didn't believe he trained them.

Oh, what was this? She was skeptical? She didn't believe he trained tigers? That little she-devil actually doubted his talent? There was no way Faraz would take that. Not now; not ever.

"I do, too! I have many tigers! I've raised and trained them all since they were little!" He stood up from his chair and marched over to the Moldovan girl, standing arms-length away just in case she tried to take a swing. "There is one back there right now! I will show you!" He grabbed his coat and before he could yank the curtain back, Alexis grabbed his shoulders and spun him around, looking none too pleased. "Young man, you do not treat any guest in that manner- especially a girl! Not in my house!" She slapped the back of his head again. Faraz griped and groaned, but that steely look of determination was already embedded in his eyes. "I just wanted to show her the tigers! If I can't show her all of them, can't I at least show her the one in there? He's really fat and old, so he's not any danger to her," he whispered to Alexis.

The older woman hissed through her teeth and exchanged glances between her son and the Romanian. "If it is alright with Mrs. Ionescu, then I suppose so. But no tricks or other tigers. I'll watch you, but you'll have to wake up your brother first." Alexis peered in to stare at the Iranian who was still konked out on the beast, drooling a bit onto the striped fur. The boy looked over at Emiliana and mouthed "wait here." Faraz didn't miss a step marching across the room to his sibling and planting his bootheel onto the side of Arash's scruffy face. "Wake up, sleepyhead. You've overstayed your welcome; and I've got a point to prove. Move it or lose it."

Post  MOSSAD TRAINED SHARK on Fri May 13, 2011 10:00 pm

"Go away, Faraz-" he groaned, as the filthy, drool, that was already rank with the scent of vomit, formed itself into a puddle on the tiger, and mixed into the hair of Arash's scraggly facial hair. He let out a hand to swat the boy away. It didn't really do much.

"You- you said I could stay, until...longer...dirty liar..." he muttered, into the tiger again. He tried to look up at his brother, but his eyes didn't want to open. He much preffered being asleep. It prevented dialogue with that Macedonian whore, and prevented anger from boiling up at his little brother.

However, as the boot heel became more and more pervasive, Arash realized he had to get up. He stood up, giving a weak shove to Faraz, as he did so. And with a groan, he moved to the woman's table. He wanted to go back to sleep again, but there was no way to do that, except in his caravan. His caravan even then, often got noisy.

"Where's the tea...?" he muttered to the Macedonian, hovering over her, and her table. He stared at the Romanian woman, again. He didn't get a good enough look at her earlier.

She watched with amusement as Faraz became more and more excited about showing off his tiger act. He was just like her boys when they were his age, it was heartwarming to see. Nicoleta gave a nod of approval when asked if Emiliana could see the tiger and waved her hand in the air, dismissing the young girl. Maybe her daughter would finally make a friend her own age, they'd just need to get past their differences first though..

The Romanian's attention fell back on Alexis, a full grin spread on her face. If there was one thing she liked more than anything, it was dancing. Any kind of dancing, it didn't matter to her. "Ahh, like the hora?" She rested her chin on her palm. "You will have to show me sometime, huh? You dance for me, I'll dance for you." The woman laughed then sat straight again, watching as Faraz poked the 'bear' and made him wake from his slumber.

Nicoleta shifted in her seat uncomfortably as he came over. He was staring. Maybe she was in his seat. She stood up to offer the chair, trying to force a smile without offending the man.
