ITS NOT WHAT YOU THINK-- Empty ITS NOT WHAT YOU THINK--

Post  DIDNEY WORL Sun Jun 05, 2011 12:10 am

It's not Cosim/Sonya (/sob I have had writers block on those vignettes for too long ): ) but it is early Franze/Djuro. This dragged on for days, which usually makes writing suck. I hope it doesn't :/ and I could have sworn I already put this up here, but I guess not XD

Here is the dress I /failed/ to describe fffff XD http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_IBebgQkv2mQ/SiMBmT9vZ7I/AAAAAAAAAIU/4L-Guw453xE/s1600-h/1888+Worth+Evening+GOwn.jpg

Djuro was standing unbearably still. These people were like vultures, he’d been told. They would jump at any chance to denounce someone on etiquette. So, he subscribed to the ‘stand still and they won’t see you’ principle. It only served to make him stand out more.

And who was this ‘they’, that threatened to clean the dignity from his bones and leave them to bleach in humiliation? A name any full-grown man would flinch under. The court of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. A name so heavy it threatened to crush him; perhaps, because he felt as if he was far from deserving. In theory, he deserved to make his presence known, sure. Zagreb was advancing far beyond its slav neighbors in what would be called, then in 1880, ‘modernity’. Then it was so, then, after 300 years of obscurity within the empire, he was called upon to appear at one of the infamous Viennese balls, and subsequently look like a fearful cat among relaxed canines, as if they would soon become aware of his presence and surround him.

It wasn’t as if he didn’t wish to be a part of this world. No, he had wished it for so long. He had wished for a ticket out of oblivion, out of the barbaric eastern european rut. For tonight, he was an upstanding member of the empire. He just was not sure how to act like one. Of course, he had practiced his ‘I kiss your hand’s in the mirror, and his ‘I lay myself before my lady’s feet’s, but neither antiquated expression was about to leave his lips anytime soon. They were too thinly pressed into a nervous line. He was alone but not, in a crowd who kept to their centuries old acquaintances like glue, while he had none to speak for.

The Croatian knew approaching anyone and announcing his status would do the opposite of impress. If one wasn’t a ‘baron von’ or a viscount, they would not be allowed anywhere. Self-made millionaires had no place at these galas, or in Vienna proper.

Vienna. Her Highness Franziska. That was someone he didn’t plan on meeting. The most intimidating one of them all. He had never even laid eyes on her, but her influence clenched the empire like a vice. He had heard stories of her, most definitely. The woman who crushed the hungarians in a single action. The woman who ruled with an absolutist iron fist. The woman with eyes like ice and a heart even colder, who had ruined two marriages with war. And she would be here. Tonight.

Almost as if some divine force wanted to make his sweating and worrying into a comedy, the room went quiet and every body turned towards the stairs of the opera house, as automatic as figures in a cuckoo clock.

An attendant came to announce this late arrival, a slew of titles and exultations coming before the name. Then he realized it wasn’t a late arrival after all, but a presence too important to be lumped into the rest. It was her.

He expected heavy steps, a soldier chant, hell, pyrotechnics, maybe. What he saw made him question if it was even the woman of legend at all.

He couldn’t even hear her step out into the crowd. But there she was-- almost as if she’d just floated there. Djuro was really beginning to second guess what people had told him. She didn’t seem like some imperialist fearmonger at all. He watched her survey the silent crowd with blue doe eyes under heavy mascaraed lashes. Her ruby lips pressed into something not quite a smile, but the expression of someone looking at expensive posessions. There was that queen people had vehemently hinted at. A wolf under the guise of a stunningly beautiful girl. Her brown hair was done up in crystals and flowers, her eyebrows formed delicate arches over those royal eyes. His own eyes traveled downwards, across crystal jewelry to a gold and lavender off-the-shoulder evening gown, decorated and bustled with bows and feathers. Her waist-- oh, her waist, The curve of the bodice almost gave him chills. She was as artfully poised as a china doll, and looked just as delicate. And just as one would hesitate around something so fragile, he, too, would probably never get to see her float by again-- something he was deeply chagrined over, now.

This was the kind he had worshipped when he had only dreamed of being a part of such a gala. Well, he was suddenly reminded that he didn’t belong again. The guests parted like the red sea to let her pass through and greet them with gloved hands. He dropped to one knee as she stopped to see him, and the eyes that had once held heavy regality he now only saw confusion in. He was radiating the same confusion from every pore.

Djuro’s voice came out shakily and jumbled when faced with who he saw as a some sort of demi-goddess. “I… I… kiss myself at my lady’s feet--” His vocal chords bubbled out with before he could catch his mistake. Still, he managed to kiss her hand-- but not in the way he should have. His lips actually touched her tiny silk-covered hand. The kiss of death. It was over, he was about to disappear into obscurity again. He kept his eyes to the ground to avoid the wrath of the queen’s certain glare.

Franziska stared at him-- then her hand, which she wasn’t sure he realized he was still gripping-- quite tightly, too. She had never seen him before, though she knew his title, and his family. She should not have laughed as she did, she should not have laughed at all. He should have been kicked out by then. Something about this man-- the starstruck look in his eyes, the way he was so put together but could not utter a single sentence… no man had appeared to her like that before. They all wore fake smiles and buried schemes beneath their coats. This man had none. “If you do intend on kissing yourself, you don’t seem like the type.” She bent down and whispered into his ear with a smile. Her voice was light and breathy due to the whale bone constricting her waist. “But I suppose its necessary to say so to fit in with the rest of them.”

She was talking to him like a real person (though she smelled more spectacular than any real person he knew--)… suddenly, he could talk back. “If the rest of them had any sense they would be kissing more than your hand.” This was his true character, finally he was shed of the shaking nervousness from before, he felt like he should, he felt ready to impress her--

SMACK!

Silk had never felt so painful. In one fell swoop she had smacked him across the face, her own burning a red far surpassing the paint on her cheeks. He had awoken the queen, but this time he was prepared to face her. “My lady is beautiful, what can i say?”

The woman was dumbfounded for a moment-- then… then she had felt something she had never felt before. Someone had challenged her, For once in her life, someone had the gall to speak anything other than niceties. Before he let go of her hand, she took her other and pried his away, tucking a paper into his sleeve from her bodice-- a means to find her without appearing with the masses. Not turning to the soldiers behind her so they wouldn’t see her smile, she ordered, “Take him away-- I am too disgusted to see such vulgarity.”

He was prodded and poked out by bayonets and rough hands, but he didn’t mention any of that in his letter home that night.
“Father,” He wrote, “I have fallen love with a porcelain doll-- this city makes one crazy.”

flskjgklkh I STALK THIS PAIRING SO HARD YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW, BABBY. YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW. :l

But honestly, besides the fact that I am in love with these two, I loveee the way you wrote this. Your writing is so fluid, and so elegant. I love your grasp of emotion here, and that dialogue. MMMMM, LOVE THIS TOO MUCH.
