Out On the Town [Chernobyl/Private] Empty Out On the Town [Chernobyl/Private]

She'd wanted to go out. Ever since Itakshir had made the mistake of letting it slip to her that there was a Ukrainian restaurant on the boardwalk, she'd been dying to go see for herself. She missed the food of her home country more than anything else; the food at the carnival was certainly wonderful compared to what she got at Mistique, but it wasn't what she'd call delicious, really. Although, ever since she'd found out (again, from Itakshir, who just didn't have the wit to keep things to himself) that Cosim went to extra lengths to make her meals better, she'd gone to equal lengths to enjoy them more, but... Nothing ever compared to the cuisine one grew up with.

At first, she'd just dropped little hints here and there, hoping he would catch on. If he did, he wasn't acknowledging it. Then she timidly tried to outright suggest they go try it, just once, but that was quickly shot down. It was far too dangerous, apparently. It was her uncontrollable weeping that caused him to finally relent.

They were in the car now, nearly to the boardwalk, and she was practically bouncing in her seat in anticipation. (If not for the seat belt, she probably could have actually bounced--she didn't really want to wear it, since no one ever did. But he insisted.) Despite that she couldn't see a thing outside of the car window, her whole face was lit up with what she could only imagine.

"Are we almost there?" She'd asked twice already, but there was no holding back her eagerness. When she thought about it, this was the first time she'd be away from the carnival since her arrival. Despite her great deal of freedom (or at least, the freedom she thought she had; the fact that she was constantly watched over was still unknown to her), and the fact that she wasn't much for going out, anyways, she supposed that every once in a while, she did need a change of pace. Anyone did, right?

Cosim never really saw the importance of the restaurant to her. After all, mostly due to his profession, food was energy, and it was a chore to have to eat so much of it. He had noticed her eating less and less (because he ate what she couldn't finish), but thought maybe it was because she wasn't feeling her best. ...Which made him worry. But when she admitted she was just homesick, and had cried, he relented.

He didn't think he'd ever seen her so happy to go anywhere. "Almost," he had reassured her both times. In fact, he had driven around it a few times, just to make sure the area was safe. Finally deeming that it was a place she could go, he stopped the car and got out to open the door for her as the old engine sputtered to a stop. He unbuckled her seatbelt and guided her down from the bottom ledge of the truck.

Upon taking her inside, he knew there was no backing out now. Soft folk music played from a gramophone in the back, and everyone there spoke the language. They got strange looks for their incongruity, but once he spoke, they were nevertheless welcomed as kin.

"Bitochik." He'd responded immediately when asked what he wanted. It wouldn't be enough, but this was her novelty, not his. Leaning down, he kissed her ear lightly to let her know it was her turn to speak. He wondered if she would have as much trouble with strangers as usual even when they spoke her own language.
