Human Name: Elizabeth “Bess” Sanders

Country/City/State/Province representing: Charleston, SC, United States of America

Human age: 19

Gender: Female

Sexual orientation: Heterosexual

Birthday/zodiac: (( will add as soon as I find a concrete date :I ))

Carnival alliance: Ragtags

Special Skills or Talents: Channels spirits from the beyonnnnd~ Bess is very practical and can make the barest of essentials even when supplies are scare. Outside of work, she is very artistic.

Role in Carnival and how it relates to the history of your character: She is the spirit medium for the Ragtags. She has provided her own separate tent in which she will perform séances for a price. She can foresee certain events of potential danger, but can’t tell where, when, or whom it will effect and to what extent. Charleston is a very spiritual city and among of the most tolerant in the South. Being one of the most densely populated and oldest cities in the United States has also provided her with her fair share of ghosts and otherworldly phantasms. Bess has become desensitized to any of the paranormal events that surround her person, preferring to ignore them until the spirits’ actions get out of hand.

Appearance (please include a short detailed paragraph or picture): Her wardrobe is limited by her already low income, but she makes do with patching up clothes both for herself and for others. She normally wears a bright patchwork skirt with varying lengths and patterns (this symbolizes Rainbow Row, a row of houses near the harbor that are famous for their bright, pastel paint jobs). She also possesses a shawl that can be draped across her shoulders or wrapped around her plume of kinky, black hair. Bess’ dark brown skin marks her distinctly as African American (the African-Americans of SC are among the few communities in the U.S. that still retain the closest genetic similarities to their African ancestors, the Yoruba and the Mende people).

Special personal items: Her gold cross and Star of David (Charleston is home to one of the oldest American Jewish communities), and her ghosts. Sure they aren’t physical beings, but they certainly have personality. The ghosts aren’t straight-up malicious, but can certainly cause a fair amount of mischief, particularly at night. Usually it is either because they are bored or lonely.

Anything Else: Bess also purchases large bundles of sweet grass to make baskets that she sells to the circus costumers. The Gullah people that live along the coastlines of South Carolina and Georgia are descendants of slaves and have inhabited the waterfront cities since Reconstruction. They are most known for their folk crafts like Gullah dolls and sweet grass baskets. Bess is for prohibition, so don’t be surprised to see her looking at your alcohol with disgust and general disdain.

AU Background history: Growing up in the slums of Charleston was no easy task for Bess. But when one lives in South Carolina, poverty is nothing new. Heck, even the Despression hardly changed much, lifestyle-wise. Her father (see Louis) was too busy politicking to pay her any attention and the two eventually had a falling out over a wide number of differences. She thought he was too backwater and he thought she was too liberal and loose. Needless to say, after her father got arrested for possession of moonshine (which she already disapproved of), she refused to pay his bail and skipped town. Using whatever money she had scrounged up from selling baskets and fortunes, Bess hopped aboard the next train to somewhere better, bigger and with more job opportunities. That train, however, just so happened to be the same one daddy dearest had hitchhiked on. The two met again when the circus was setting up camp, and well…things are still pretty rocky between them to say the least.
