The Other White Meat [Rakiura/Open]

Post  ArtingStarvist on Sat Feb 19, 2011 8:34 pm

"Now this creature here," she heard someone exclaim from outside the tent, "Is the flesh-eating Cannibal Queen of the Pacific!" Anahira could not see through her blindfold, but she could hear the flaps of the tent flutter as the crowd filtered in, their excited, unsteady footsteps, the slight gasps at the sight of her, tied down, tattooed, and bloodstained. There were even a few screams.

"Do not worry, good people!" the voice declared, "She is properly restrained and will cause no harm to you. Instead, she shall present entertainment." She heard the platter set before her and the blindfold was removed. The crowd gasped as she craned her neck to viciously tear into the human arm set before her, drooling as she had been instructed and savouring the delicacy.

"The innocent are not harmed here, folks," the voice promised, "That belonged to an executed criminal." The crowd was still cringing and looking at her in horror. She did not understand why they looked so horrified when she was fed. It was a delicacy. Meat. They ate meat, didn't they? Without a word, she grinned wolfishly like they trained her and continued her meal.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anahira was released to wander when everyone had left. Actually, she had been given another piece of something 'respectable' and left inside a trailer. She had learned long ago that they put something inside it to make her sleep until the next show, and had taken to not eating the things not given to her during the show until she was tired enough. She had figured out how to turn the knob with bare feet and slunk around the animals' caravans.

The colors were making her head hurt, and the undercooked meat she had been fed was making her stomach churn. She gagged, then continued on her way, shifting her shoulders uncomfortably. Her bonds were tight and chaffed her skin, keeping her arms wrenched painfully behind her back.

Gritting her teeth, she wriggled again, then rubbed against the side of a caravan moodily, to see if she could loosen the ropes, but nothing seemed to work. She shuffled towards where the others rested to see if she could find some ingestible food someone might have left behind.

Faraz was unimpressed by the showboating the management did. Nothing impressed him, really. It was cheap, profane, and lacked originality. Why could he get a job at Mystique? Oh yeah, because they thought the idea of a boy who tamed tigers like a pro was ludicrous. He had the skill, the professionalism, and they blew him off. "Their loss!" Faraz kicked an empty bean can across the field of the Ragtag camp.

It was hard being content with the way things had been in the past few months, what with his brother's attempt to usurp their father, and running away from home. It was also difficult being treated well again, at least by the freaks. They were so different, and obviously deserved much more than their lot in life. He pitied them for having to work in squalid condition with little to no reward bestowed to them. Being a child, Faraz stubbornly upheld a policy of fairness and right. Life just wasn't fair; he would change that if he could...

A scuttling from a box car beside him caught his attention. He was so engulfed in his thoughts that he passed the tiger cage completely, on his way to feed them several cuts of less-than-stellar meat. Laying down the heavy bucket, the Persian boy read the sign: "CANNIBAL QUEEN - DO NOT ENTER!" He silently contemplated leaving then because the thought of having some islander chowing down on his flesh like one of his big cats was more than he could handle. However, instead of the howling and teeth scraping he had imagined would emanate from the cell, there was only pained moans and shuffling, occasionally the growls of someone's stomach. Faraz, undetered, knocked gingerly on the door, taking note of the food pail outside that had been empty for quite a while now.

"Hello? Are you alright? Are you sick? I have some food if you want any, but it's not much..."

The plate of drugged food was looking rather good, right about now. She eyed it ravenously, wondering how long it would be before they simply overdosed and killed her, when a sound stopped her dead in her tracks. Anahira looked at the door, cocking her head in confusion.

A child's voice? What sort of child would be in this place, let alone knocking on her door? Without a word, she shuffled to the door, lifting a dirty foot to grip the knob best she could. She failed miserably, and instead turned, wincing as the tops holding her arms back protested, straining against her skin.

She gripped the doorknob and turned it, walking forward to let the door swing open. Without a word, she sized up the boy standing before her, checking him for possible threats. He seemed.... Well enough. And he spoke.

Anahira flinched at the sound of the words, but managed to force out in broken English, "H-Hello. Sick. Bad food. Good food. Yes. No eat you boy." She cringed at the barbaric sound of her speech, turning her head to focus instead of her visitor. "Boy untie? Vine hurt." She shrugged her shoulders, trying to draw his attention to the ropes.

Faraz jumped back slightly as the door swung open. His initial panic was then dulled by a wave of shame upon seeing the poor girl in such squalid conditions. Why was she tied up like that? How much were they feeding her? Did they only let her out only for shows?

He peeked through the doorway, wide eyes looking for any remains that looked remotely human- a skull, a hip, but there was only a plate of some rancid-looking meat. "Eeew," Faraz's nose scrunched up at the lame excuse for a meal. "Yeah, you need some real food for once, but first-" he walked over to her hands, gingerly tugging at the blood-stained ropes. Scratching his head, he took out a dull pockey knife from his overall's pocket and began to laborously saw at the itchy cord.

"Hold still for a moment and...there you go! You can move around as much as you'd like now!" The boy beamed at his small act of charity, pulling his tigers' food pail to his new friend. "It's all beef, I know that much," he mumbled, "but I think there's a bit of steak in there somewhere. Do you need some water or some bandages or something?"

Anahira watched the boy's face quietly, waiting for him to gasp, or scream, or run, but he did none of these things. To her, it appeared as if he barely batted an eye. She was confused. Why wasn't he frightened? Maybe he was dim-witted or naive, she decided. But he seemed rather keen and had an intelligent light in his eyes, and the fact that he appeared to be working here made her decide that he was not naive.

She smiled gratefully when he mentioned food. Food was good. Her stomach rumbled in agreement, still rather empty despite the nice arm she had consumed earlier. She held still as he tugged at the ropes, watching him with wide eyes. Any tugged on them chaffed her skin, but she made no sounds to alert him to this. It was better he got them off, and quickly, rather than fret over her discomfort.

When he cut them off, she shrugged and rolled her shoulders, thankful for the release of her arms, though her wrists remained cuffed together. Without hesitation, she knelt and gingerly raised one foot, pulling it through the loop of her arms. She carefully moved the other through, then stood, smiling slightly at the sight of her hands, something she had not seen in a long time. She took a sidelong glance at the boy.

"Cooked?" she squeaked, eyeing the pail thoughtfully. At this point, she could care less, but the idea of something cooked made her stomach growl. Anahira moved towards the pail, cocking her head curiously, then aimed her gaze at the boy. Thinking about it, the ropeburns were nothing she would have trouble with. Her throat, however, was dry as parchment. Not to mention the dried blood on her face and arms and in her hair was uncomfortable and sticky.

"Water," she decided, then looked at the boy gratefully. A friend, she decided. She took another step towards him and leaned forward to touch the tip of her nose to his, traditional Hongi, offering him a small grin. A genuine one, rather than what she'd been trained to give crowds. "Friends, we now."

Faraz scooted back to give the islander some room to move, unsure of how Anihara would react to her newly acquired freedom. It was like liberating an pet that someone had abandoned long ago. But she showed no hostility or aggression like most would have expected out of a "savage." Faraz, however, was very open-minded for someone his age. Not quite naivety, but still enough to believe that there was some reason to give someone the benefit of the doubt. He giggled and blushed a bit when she rubbed noses with him, only scrunching up his nose at the lingering stench of rotten meat on her breath. How long had it been since she had a bath? She was different, sure, but no stranger than he or the next person. "Friends? Sure! I don't see why not?"

"You want water, okay?" He stood up and brushed his grimy pants off with his equally dirty hands. He fished a partially cooked bit of steak that he had found on top of the waste bin. It wasn't restaraunt quality, but hey! Nobody had any right to be picky in the middle of a wasteland. "Here; have some of this. I'll be back with some water; don't go nowhere!" Closing the door gently on his way out, the boy took the empty pail by the wagon to the communal spigot to fetch some clean water. There was no doubt in his mind that she needed it. After a few excruciatingly long seconds, he rushed back to the wagon, hoping that no one caught wind of his mischief. "Did I miss anything? Anyone stop by?"

As soon as Faraz left the tent, Anahira tora into that beef with the exact savage ferocity that the boy had been excepting. It wasn't especially good, but it wasn't moving or just freshly killed or completely raw or drugged, so she would stomach it, no matter what. The doorknob turned and she froze, gulping down the last chunk before he saw.

"No peoples. They not like canny-ball," she stood up taller, puffing her chest out as if to spite them. The sight of the water made her slouch contentedly, though, and she carefully moved towards the boy, reaching out gently to grasp the handle with both hands. No reason to scare her new friend, when no one seemed to want to talk to her or be near her.

Savoring it, she cupped her hands and washed off her face, looking around for some sort of towel. She settled for her bedsheet, leaving a blotchy red streak on the fabric, and continued to wash herself off the best she could, being handcuffed and all. She glanced at Faraz, offering a shy smile.

"Am looking better?" She cocked her head again, suddenly curious about something, "What boy do? Not like me?" She certainly hoped he wasn't forced to do the same things as her. The thought horrified her, actually. Someone so young.

Faraz had no doubt that she was near starved, knowing how the management ran in the Ragtags. He had arrived just after the last owner died, and he heard stories about how different, how better things were when he was alive. Apparently standards of living had died with him.

"You look much better now," he commented, marveling at the empty food bucket. "And that's great, sort of, that no one came by to check. I was worried that I'd get caught." How long had it been since she had eaten something decent? Or had a bath? Anger boiled in his gut at the very injustice, which was doubled by the sight of her handcuffs. "Why did they put you in these?" He asked, turning her wrists over side by side. The skin around the metal restraints looked chafed and pale. "These are much too tight! I bet we could find someone to get these off." He pulled off her ratty bedsheet and threw it across her head. "Here- cover up so no one will recognize you. I'll say you're a relative or something, okay. Follow me," Faraz said as he tugged her hands towards the door. Back home, he had seen women wearing burkas and hijab since they were Muslims. He was supposed to be a Muslim (that was Arash's own statement; not his), but being raised with little to no parental supervision had left him indifferent to religion in general. It was a poor scheme, but better than none.

Anahira watched in confusion as he inspected her hands, holding out her wrists for him to see better. Sure, they hindered her a lot, but she was used to it by now and she barely noticed them. She shrugged nonchalantly,

"They think I dang-er-us.... No like canny-ball me." She watched as he placed the sheet over her head and followed along after him timidly, glancing around to see if someone had seen them.

She knew that people didn't like her wandering, but if her new friend thought it was best for her to get help for the cuffs, she thought so, too. She glanced around again, eyesight hindered by the cloth, and murmured quietly,

"Who we go see?"
